We need you!

Vision Action is looking for volunteers…

If you’re an Optometrist or Dispensing Optician, and would like to make a real difference by training Spec Vendors in developing countries, please get in touch.

What will I be asked to do?

Volunteers take part in 2 week training / outreach programmes, initially in Cameroon.
Volunteers make a contribution of £1000 plus Gift Aid (£1250 if paid for by an employer) to cover their expenses. We handle flights, accommodation and food.
Duties include giving simple training in –

  • Vision screening

  • Selection of appropriate spectacles for common problems

  • Basic eye conditions

  • Making appropriate referrals

  • Giving good customer service

  • Basic business skills

We will also (depending on local conditions) refract and supply prescription glasses to complex cases, and make medical referrals.

Is this for me?

Good inter-personal skills and enthusiasm are far more valuable to us than encyclopaedic knowledge of advanced optics. You should be in good health, and prepared to work under leadership for a minimum of 10 days during the project. Rest and relaxation are important, and we will ensure you have a great time and many happy memories to bring home. We welcome volunteers with previous optometry development experience.

Specialist volunteers

We welcome enquiries from ophthalmologists, ophthalmic nurses, photographers, journalists, documentary makers and development professionals. We can easily make good use of your skills, while providing an amazing experience.
